M W pistons and sleeve questions

I guess we have M&W pistons in our 830 diesel. Can anyone tell me the specs for the sleeves and pistons? Looking for piston diameters, sleeve bore, etc.

Another question: In an engine that has been stuck, can the sleeves be honed to clean the rust out? I have already run a hone on them. The surface of the sleeves appears to be smooth to the touch, but they still don't have the "new sleeve" look. Will the compression be affected by any residual rust particles? Should I not bother, and purchase a new set of sleeves?

Thanks in advance.

Don and Glenn, thanks much for the tips.

I took a piston to one of the local tractor mechanics. It's a M & W piston with M & W rings.

His advice on the homing was pretty much the same as what you guys said. I'll mike the sleeves real good, and see what happens. The rust stains will eventually go away with running. I guess the big question is the shape of the piston ring lands, to make sure they are still square, or at least somewhat square.

It's still kind of a question as to what happened with this tractor - someone spent a pretty healthy chunk of $$$ and time to rebuild the engine, then it got a slit in the left rear tire, and they started cannibalizing the tractor. At least that's what it seems...

Brent,
You never know why someone abandons a tractor. I am ashamed to say that my Dad's D had a bad magneto and started hard so we only used it once in a while. Then it got tight and we stole the head for a DC-4 and then it got a lot tighter. Now its in the shop and we are smashing out the pistons and sleeves-they were brand new. Good Luck on your project. That 830 should have some good power with those M and W's.

If you need more power just make some fuel adjustments. My 830 CK dyno'd 78 HP a few years ago, when I had a chance to check it, It's the onle one we ever turned up that far[ out of the 4 we have] ,She likes fuel 4 gallon a hour worth.Don't use much any more, we have went to 70 series, they take a lot less fuel !

Yes, I totally agree with you - a tractor can be abandoned for any reason. For example, around here in Ohio, if a tractor breaks down with hay on the ground and rain coming tomorrow, guys will do almost anything to get it going again. I guess it's worth it to cannibalize a tractor if you have 2000-3000 bales of hay that need to be baled. The problem (you already know this) is that during the winter, the cannabalized tractor never gets put back together, for one reason or another.

We are trying to get several tractors going now, so it should prove to be a busy spring and summer. I just hope it turns out to be worth it.

Brent,
Thanks for the glue tip!! I'll try it and see if it works. I can't help you on the M and W's but honing does not leave a perfectly smooth surface. It is supposed to be slightly rough to catch oil to assist in the break in process (or so the old timers tell me). The only way to tell if the sleeves are good is to measure them to determine the amount of wear.

Brent; The sleeves will be just fine. Just hone them to break the glaze. Clean the piston ring lands carefully, get a new set of rings and put it together. Can't help you on the 830 size... Gene
