Why do you suppose Case recommended using used engine oil in the oil bath air cleaner on the L, C and probably D series tractors. Was oil that expensive back then? I certainly think used clean oil would be better for the engine. Does anyone still use this method?

OIL/LUBE; ALL THIS DETAILED TALK OF THE GOOD OLE DAYS SHOULD MAKE MOST TRACTION BUFF'S WANT TO RETURN TO THOSE DAYS GONE BY WITH LOTS OF KEROSENE, OIL AND EVEN TODAYS WASTE OILS TO BE KING DURING SOME REAL TRYING MOMENTS.
KEEP THOSE RIGS LUBED, TUNED AND LOW TILL WAY PAST DUSK. THANK GOD FOR WATER AND BETTER DAYS AS LONG AS THEY MAY LAST. OIL ON!!

It makes no difference! This oil never goes into the engine, it's sole purpose is to collect dirt and any oil will do for that.

Back in the kerosene days, everyday you drained down to the lower level plug on the pan. That oil went in the air cleaner, the oil that was in the aircleaner went in the oil can. Then you put new oil in the engine up to the top plug. If we plowed or fitted all week then the oil got changed at the end of the week, or first rainy day.

As I recall, the owners manual for the kerosene SC said to drain the oil down to the lower plug after every 10 hours of operation.

I always thought the idea to drain the oil everyday was to get the kerosene out of the oil. It was drained in the mornings because the kerosene would seperate & settle on the top. Of course this would't be done on a gas engine, just a kerosene burner.

Using "used" oil in an "oil bath" air cleaner is/was a cost savings measure. Harmful dust can be caught in that type of air cleaner just as well with used oil as new oil. A greater issue is cleaning and changing that oil often enough to keep it working properly.

You have to remember that these machines were built during the depths of the Great Depression and every tractor company was trying to sell machines on the cheapness of operation. It probably made good sense at the time to be able to say used oil instead of having to buy new oil when every penny counted.

Guess that would be ok.Dont ever remember doing that tho. The owners manual for a 1958 Ford 641 recommended oil changes every 50 hrs. My grandpa would change the oil in his car and then add it to his water pump engines as they needed oil. One engine pumped water to their house and the other was used for the yard and garden.
