I've been looking for a used backhoe/loader for general use around the farm for a while, and have recently run across several 580B's in okay condition with (I guess) reasonable prices. They all seem to share one problem- seriously leaking hydraulics on the bucket and hoe. Although I try to do all my own work, I've never tackled hydraulics before other than replacing a line or two on my farm tractors. Is it reasonable to bite on one of these construction machines and do the rebuilds myself? How hard to get and expensive are parts for these machines? Lastly, any other specific problems to look for on a 580B prior to buying?

Thanks,
Zippy

Changing the packings and seals on 580/580B backhoes hydraulic cylinders are relatively easy. On most of the hydraulic cylinders, both the piston seals and gland seals can be changed without losing more than a cup of oil. Remove the pin in the rod end only. Do NOT remove any hoses. If there's a small screw in the piston rod end packing gland, remove it. It's there to prevent the packing gland from unscrewing. Start the backhoe engine and retract the piston rod slightly. Prop up the cylinder on a steep angle with the rod end raised. Use a spanner tool to unscrew the packing gland. After it's loose, screw it back in at least 4 turns. Start the engine and easily run out the rod until it stops against the packing gland. Turn the engine off, move the control lever for that cylinder back and forth to remove any pressure. Unscrew the packing gland again and pull the piston rod/piston out. After replacing the gland seals and piston seals, prop the control lever in the retract position without the engine running and tap the piston rod/piston back into the cylinder. When tapped in about one foot, screw the packing gland back into the cylinder tight. If the little screw hole no longer lines up, leave it out! Remove the control lever prop, start the engine move the control lever to position the piston rod for the pin replacement. Aftermarket seals can be purchased from Martin Fulid and Power in St. Joseph, Michigan at a reasonable price.

I would check the shuttle if so equipped, they seem to be a lot of trouble when they get older. Been there done that.
