Hi,

My neighbour has a case VAC, with pto and drawbar, no hydraulics, was running when parked over 15 years ago. It was parked because the brakes are gone. It probably needs tires. What would it be worth?

Thanks,
Mark

The cheapest VA that I've purchased lately was a VAC N.F. which was running with a fairly fresh valve job, good tires and battery for $600.00; it has the high-pressure hydraulic system. I gave $750 for a VAC adj. W.F. w/live hydraulics and the Eagle hitch; ditto for a VAO with live hyd. and the early add-on Eagle hitch. $50 got me a VAC like you are describing; it had sat for more the 17 years and required TLC (WD40 in the cylinders with occasional air pressure freed the pistons) to get it running plus the usual plug wires, carb cleaning, battery, tires, etc. The tractor shown was bought directly from the scrap yard so it cost me $75 after he added his profit; it's going for parts. With scrap prices being high right now more tractors are showing up at the local re-cycler so I am getting ready to place an ad in the local paper that will be something like: "Buying CASE and other tractors for 10% OVER scrap value AND I will load and haul from your location at no cost to you! CASH on the barrel-head...CALL 249-XXXX."! As far as your deal goes I'd offer a hundred if motor is free and negotiate...if it's not free then offer him scrap price per pound + a bit (50-75) and go from there. A 3-point is pretty easy to add if you can cut and weld. The hi-pressure pumps and cylinders are also easy to work on....you can always add the live pump if you feel you need it.

I was thinking $600 - $800 for one in decent condition that maybe running myself. Of course I've forbidden my father from selling his, so I suppose we can't put a price on that one!

Check the classifieds and see what good running VAC's are going for these days. Look at the cost of tires and repairing the brakes and it is more than likely locked up. If you can't get it for a couple hundred dollars I would keep looking. If it were mine I'd give it to you. That said no you can't have my 49 VAC!

I was given a 1945 Case VAIW. Motor stuck. Otherwise complete. Its a project for me. I don't expect it to be worth much when I'm done. In fact, it will be donated to The Commemorative Air Force (aka Confederate Air Force) for hauling vintage aircraft around the airport.

My opinion: I didn't get into this hobby to make money, which is a good thing since it ain't likely I will. :-)

VACs are good little tractors. I've got my eye on a VAC with a sickle bar mower. It's been parked for at least 15 years. Motor is in a shed. The rest of the tractor is parked outside. It will take a bunch of work, but...

Mark,

I had a shot at one that was in Illinois, But I hate to even type this my WIFE said I need more room before I can buy.

Still KICKIN' myself but should be kickin' someone else(=
He was askin' 1800. I think he got it. It had the eagle hitch and live hydraulis and the motor was done. so like the other guy said I would guess around 450-700.

Well, a lot depends on many things. With just the info you have given, my answer would be "not much". A few more details would help.
Is the motor free?
Is it outside or under cover?
Is it pretty much complete?
15 years is a long time. Even if it was running, had decent tires and wasn't too bad looking, it still wouldn't be worth more than $1000 to $1500. Maybe less in other places.

I took one on trade a few months ago. Gave $1200 and sold for $1,100. It had new tires, straight metal, excellant brakes, guages, three point, etc. It had a couple liitle problems like a leaking sedement bowl. To me they are good little tractors just don't bring much.

Sounds like a nice one. I expect you are talking about the Eagle hitch? That would jack the price up significantly. The Eagle hitch probably adds $300 - $400 to the value of the tractor. As for the sediment bowl, ours leaked for about 30 years. That reminds me, I have to call my dad and see if he got the screen and gasket replaced on his VAC yet. I'd like to hear that he got that running again.

I bought and then later sold a running VAC. Sheet metal wasn't very good, rubber was fair, but ran well. Bought for $450, sold for $450.
