Hey tractor collectors. If you're sitting on the fence as to buying that old tractor you want, just be aware of high scrap prices. My brother just told me about a bunch of complete old tractors that he just missed out on. Scrap man beat him to them. IH F-20's, John Deere A, Case LI with loader & new 18" tires, and some others. Most all of them very complete; $300 to $400 each scrap man paid. He was already cutting them up.Case was in excellent condition. Sickening! I just learned that scrap is the highest it's been in last 15 years around here in my parts - W. PA. Am I behind the times or what's going on?

They probably want to use this old stuff because it was so good the firts time, they hope some of that quality will make it through to the next time.

Heavy equipment manufacturers are having trouble getting steel. We are purchasing any plate steel we can find to keep the lines running(not efficient). We have gotten 'no quotes' from 1 American & 1 Canadian steel mills cause they are just flat out of capacity. We could be short in April. We had our biggest 4th qtr in 15 years & this year is looking just as good. All of Cat is having trouble keeping up with orders. This could have something to do with the price of scrap iron. Let's not sell them our old iron!

Scrap prices are high when the economy is in the trash can. Just exactly where is the economy getting better?

Hey Vic in Indiana, Pa. Ever heard of Zelienople? I'm near there, but involved heavily in steam & old tractor club at Portersville, Pa. Ever been to our shows? If not, come on over especially to our big show first week in August- 5,6,7,8. Lord willing, I'll have my Case DI-NT there for first time.

Yeah, it's kind of sad. The past six months scrap prices have gone crazy, and as I understand it, it's because of the Chinese. They're hungry for raw material. So, we're crushing the old American tractors and sending the stuff to China, and then buying it all back again in finished products. I just bought a brand new water pump for my International Harvester diesel that was made in China - bought it new for half the cost of an American rebuilt. It's probably made from a ground-up John Deere. Sad thing is, they're probably using cut-up Catepillars and making nuclear weapons out of them . . . and cheap!
