Can anyone tell me a good way to check if a generator is charging? This tractor has no amp gauge.

If you have a multimeter check teh voltage across teh battery terminals while the engine is off then again whilst it is running. For a 6v should be about 6.3 shut off (if it is fully charged and nearly 8 when running.

Don't have a meter check teh lights are they brighter whie running
(If like me you have no lights try a light bulb and some wire across the battery terminals...should be brighter when engine is running

If the battery goes dead its not charging-- if it stays up for a month or so, it probally is charging!

If you have a portable ammeter, you can ground the field wire to the engine block and check the output that way. You will have to disconnect the wires from the voltage regulator.

I mean't to have you disconnect the field wire from the regulator. The generator still has to have power from the battery to charge.

The easey way is to have the tractor running and take the battery cable off, if the tractor quits running the battery disconnected, the generator is not working.
