How much is interchangeable between the two?

Are the engines the same?

I understand, from reading the archives, that the 731 is a 730 deisel with a standard dry clutch - is my understanding correct?

Hey Brent: The only difference between the 730 & 830 is the engine.

John:
Has anybody checked if the blocks are the same. It would be a cheap upgrade to install 830 sleeves ina 730.

Jim

The blocks are not the same between the 730 and 830 on both the gas and deisel. but they both would bolt in place of each other if you were doing a engine switch. Bill

The blocks are the same. I'm pretty sure the sleeve holes will have to be bored just a little to accept the 830 engine sleeves. You'll probably want to put 830 heads on it since you'll need the bigger valves in the 830 head for better breathing. If you want to make it really strong, find an 870 engine, (336 cid diesel). It is also the same block except it has an extra head bolt in each head. If you use the whole engine that's no problem. There are several options on an engine for these old tractors. I'm currently building a 700 CASE which came out with a 251 cid gasoline engine. It will now has 336 cubes. I'm using the 4.625 sleeves from a 1370 and Moline flat-top LP pistons. Compression is going to be around 10 to 1. I don't know what to expect but I'm giving it a try anyway.

It doesn't matter...the gentleman doesn't want to part with his 731. I was hoping that he didwant to sell it, as it was semi-torn down (or so I thought).

So I guess we'll have to look into getting a parts tractor somewhere else. I have a couple of possibilities, and we are hopeful that one will pan out. We'll have to see...time will tell
