Really liked your architectural work. If you're ever up here near Vail and Beaver Creek resort in Colorado you should see some of the stuff thats being built. I think you'd enjoy it. Wild, totally high end homes just like your project. I went into a HUGE house a while back that had a secretly hinged bookcase in a paneled library as the door to the mechanical room. mech room was the size of my normal living room and so immaculate you could eat off the floor. just unreal.

Anyways my question, if I might- as you have a DC and an SC, is the generator the same? my friend plans to convert his SC to an alternator and I have the option of getting his generator or a free chev alternator. Right now I have nothing on the tractor, just an empty bracket. Which way would you go if it was yours?
Thanks,
David

Hi David,

I haven't started work on the DC, so I haven't looked at the generator yet. I typed up the SC generator part numbers in a previous post- I guess it's time to look at the DC numbers and see if any are the same...

SC GENERATOR PART NUMBERS:

(These come from various SC parts catalogs- and I can't be sure what years the switch between models occurred:)

Part #06240AB- Generator. Purchased from Electric Auto-Lite Co., Toledo, OH. Their No. GBM 4809-B

Part #09063AB- Generator. Purchased from Electric Auto-Lite Co., Toledo, OH. Their No. EO-10194. (a later year parts catalog lists this same Case part # as Auto-Lite No. GHD6001C.)

DC GENERATOR PART NUMBERS:

Part #03514AB- Generator, Electric Auto-Lite. (no part # given). (from the 1939 parts catalog)

Part #07100AB- Generator. (Prior to Tractor No. 5203324.) Purchased from Electric Auto-Lite Co., Toledo, OH. Their No. GAS4167.

Part #06240AB- Generator. (Tractor No. 5203324 and after.) Purchased from Electric Auto-Lite Co., Toledo, OH. Their No. GBM 4809-B

So- it looks like the GBM 4809-B is the same for both models. I have no idea if the pulley sizes are the same, although the catalogs note different bracket and belt sizes needed for different generators.

To make a very long story short- I'd take the free generator.

I'm glad you liked the house. I just hope I get to show my Mom around it once before the doors of the project are closed to me forever...

This is excellent info- thanks a bunch
And actually only the alternator is free. we haven't talked price yet on the generator...
re the conversion- my DC is essentially retiring to a well earned, easy life of parade duty etc. So:
To convert or not to convert, that is the question. whether it is nobler in the minds of caseheads to stick with the gen or better in terms of reliability to go with the alternator. (My apaologies to Shakespeare) what do you think stay original or go to the alt?

David; I have DC that came with no generator. I got a 6v Alternator (GM Design) that requires no regulator. It works just fine. The drag link hits it at full turn but doesn't cause any problems...If I were a little smarter I could probably design a new bracket that would avoid that problem. My girl works for her gas, mowing and snow plowing...if yours is more for show the alternator looks wildly out of place (white metal) and painting it with all the slots, holes etc. looks to be too difficult.

Paul That sounds like a pretty nice solution- still six volt but no regulator. Got a GM part number by any chance? Also how long ago were those made and are they relatively eay to find? Thanks David

David: Sorry it took so long I had to get the resident photo expert out to take a picture. (I posted two in the parts&pices section) I got it from a local shop that rebuilds starters and generators. There was a sticker on it with the name of the company that he gets them from that does the conversion them but it is gone. I believe they take used GM 12v alternators and rebuild them to 6v. There is one issue with the GM 1 wire alternator. While it will charge at idle speeds it first has to initialize itself at about 1500 rpm before it will start to charge. Since redline on a DC is about 1390 I was concerned but the alternator drives off the water pump shaft. That is turning at least twice as fast as the engine (based on the pulley sizes) then my guy provided a very small pulley for the alternator which is much smaller than the water pump shaft pulley so there is another speed jump. He also was able to adjust the initialization speed on the alternator down to about 1200 rpm...bottom line she initializes herself at just above idle and will then charge even at very slow idle speed. Since she starts easily there is very little charging showing on the amp meter. (Though last week after she had sat for while and the temp was just above zero she took several cranks to start and then I noticed the amp meter up around 15 for a few minutes.

If you need ore pictures info email me
