My 48 has real bad pits in the #2 & #3 sleaves from being stuck, smokes and does not have the power of my 50 VAC, has had a hard life, alot of hours on belt work and proberally never had a thermostat in it by the ammount of sludge in the inside. would it be more cost effective to buy an assembled short block or to re build mine. Value bilt has short blocks for about $1400, $1300 with core. Is that a good price, is it a good engine, or is ther a better price, supplier for a short block? Thanks Pete

Check the mains while you're in there.

Chicken:

The same Valu*Bilt has the pistons/sleeves/rings kit for $500, and rod bearings for about $100 more. If your bottom end is in decent shape (the engine turns so darn slow anyway), I'd think the $500 kit would be the best value. Bear in mind that I just did a '50 VAC head, installed all new valves, springs, guides and seats and had $350 in it, so you can get alot in just a head these days!
