Hi All,

Well, I've been uploading new pictures again. Thought I'd make some galleries with tractor lights today-

The first set of pics are of the lights for my Case SC. My Dad pulled these original lights off the tractor when we bought it in '84, and he replaced them with sealed beam lights. Unfortunately, the original lights burned up when the barn caught fire in '93.

While cleaning out the mess- I found the burned lights. They were in pretty bad shape- but I've decided to try and save them. I now have another set of 6V Guides to be "correct"... so I'm going to try and restore the burned ones with some automotive halogen bulbs.

I've finally got all the burned plastic and other crud off of them, and I bought some repro lenses from Don L. Here's what they look like right now: (not finished yet)

My photo album: 5-3/4" Guide Tractor Lights

The other pics are of a 7 inch flat lens Guide Tractor Light that I got with some other junk at an auction. I thought I might find a buddy for it and put them on my DC... or turn it into a fender mounted backup light.

I soaked it in Evapo-Rust for awhile, and cleaned it up yesterday with a bristle brush. The silver on the reflector is completely gone, so this one is going to need some further work, as well. Don L. told me this light was from an Oliver 70- but it will be a CASE light when I get through with it:

My photo album: 7" Guide Tractor Lights

That's the end of "show and tell" for today. I hope I'm not boring you guys.

Hi Mike,
Cool pictures! Dash looks great!
Are your DC/SC lights painted black like my LA? If so, what kind of paint? Inside my LA lights (where the rust has not invaded:) the paint is REALLY glossy.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Steve

Yep, Steve- looks like they were black. After the fire they were REALLY black! (grin)

Black light shells and flambeau on the mounting brackets.

Can't tell you what type of paint- I would imagine any gloss black would do.

Here's a pic of an original light I bought off of Ebay:

Mike,
Man, that light set & bat cover is in awesome shape! Same black as the inside of my LA lights. Gloss sounds good to me.
Thanks,
Steve

Mike in all of your pictures had you got some of a S C case (1947) from the back end. Id like to now if or where the light should go. Should it be 4 1/2 or a 5 1/4 lens? Thanks Mike. Elliott from ILL

Elliot,

Forgot I had this, too... be sure and check out the second link (to the parts catalog illustration)- it shows the bracket and the light.

Elliot,

None of my pics of SC tractors show a backup light- but I do have a picture of a '43 SC that still had the bracket on it.

Baggsy can correct me if I'm wrong- but it should have been a 5-3/4" Guide light just like the front headlights... except there was an additional red bulb and a switch on it.

Hope this helps,
-Schotte

Mike,
I think the later models with the combination taillight used a 4 3/4 inch light. The previous models without the combination tail light used a 5 3/4 inch light identical to the headlights. The very first SC's and DC's used a fender mounted light on each fender, one facing forward and one rearward. Someone else might have better information.

Dad's '41 had fender mounted lights pointing forward on both sides and also one side had a light pointing to the rear. The side (right, I think) with both lights just had one mount with both lights on it. All of the pictures of early SCs shows one light on each fender, one pointing forward and the other back. I have never yet seen a SC that had the lights like his and if his were not the original lights, they were 6 volt Case lights of some kind.

Hello Mike,

Your posts are never boring! I always enjoy reading what you have to say.

Here are lights mounted on a '38 L that I bought last year. Do you think that they are correct?

Thanks,

Dave Olson - East-Central Illinois

Hi Dave!

I just got an early DC parts catalog (for the 1939-40 year models)... and it showed that 7" flat lens guide light and that EXACT same mounting bracket that you have on your "L" fenders.

I'd say it's a pretty good bet that you've got original equipment there.

Has anyone seen a Case Fob like this one? It's
a DC or SC tractor. And very detailed. On the back
it has for the lowest cost per acre of work use
the newest tractor with the oldest name --CASE--
with easy-on easy-off motor lift implements- more
tractor than you ever saw before. Made in U.S.A.
F.H.Nobel Co. Chicago. Made of brass. Was pretty
dirty and have been polishing it.

Hey Mike: 12V on an SC?? Shame!! Seriously, I have an easier time with the 6V gen than an alternator. On the SC I restored, you know the one, I installed 6V Sealed Beams. Had to file a notch, but worked very well.

I have a set of 7-inch light housings that came off an Oliver or Moline. I bought a set of the flat lenses from Don L. to go on them. I'm going to put them on my 1945 kerosene SC.

ZZZZZ ! Not really - I have the original lights and generator for my SC (in boxes - tractor is currently 12 volt). Even though I work in the electronic/electrical field I think that the 6 volt light/charging system is one of the most challenging areas of tractor restoration. Parts are old, delicate, and sometimes hard to find. I marvel at the patience and ability of those who can restore these systems. Good Luck!
