Slightly interested in a 500 diesel. I haven't looked at it, so I know nothing about them. I think the engine's stuck.

Is the 500 a rare tractor?

Are parts available?

What's the hp rating? Live hydraulics and PTO?

I have my dads 500 engine tore down (engine had been full of water 20 years)in my shop. I would like to have it running by spring for the tractor shows this summer. Where can I find an engine kit for it? I heard they are expensive but I can't even find one. Any Ideas?

One of the best sounding engines ever made. Six cylinder, 1300 rpm, compression around 15:1, makes a wonderful noise. Not rattly like newer diesels with higher compression ratio and higher rpm. As the guys said, a stuck one can be a little risky. If you are looking at the one on ebay, he said he can move it a little each way. Pictures show intake and exhaust uncovered, suspect water in one or more cylinders. Might be able to open compression release and pump most of it out.

They could be nice tractors, spendy to fix, heads crack, injection pumps are costly, the small flange sleeves were only used for about a year, noisy pinion drives are common, most fenders are the brakes, seat supensions are 4x4's, power steering leak, the frt ends shimmy in road gear. exhaust elbows all welded up. Hummm, that about covers it.

The 500 was made 1953-1956, total of 5985 units made, depends on the serial number if you want to consider it rare. 1953=335, 1954=4300, 1955=450 and 1956=900. If the engine is stuck try to buy cheap, engine work can turn out to be expensive on these tractors. Might check for cracked heads, they had two head casting numbers so make sure all three are the same if ordering gasket set.
