I am in the process of rebuilding my case 500b I in herited from my father. It started knocking the other night, so i dropped the pan, and 2 of the rod bearings are shot, and there was definatley not much oil splashed around, everything was pretty dry. I removed the valve cover and there was no oil at all in the the top end.

Several years ago, my father removed the oil filter...i dont know why. I thought he bypassed the filter, but i was wrong. He used a piece of probably .062 cork, and completely blocked off the ports leading into and out of the filter.

Hence the bearing failure!

I have the aluminum piece that bolts to the block, the filter base i gues, but what else do i need? My manual does not show a picture of the oil filter assembly.

Thanks,
Matt

Sounds like you need a complete tear down and then get the block cooked. A blocked off oil filter is not a big issue. Just change oil more often. I would guess that you are going to need a new oil pump. Was it # 3 & 4 rods. They are at the end of the oil galley in the crank. Oil pressures in the 148 engine on my 311b only runs in the teens so you don't have a lot to spare.
Add together, loss due to wear, dirty oil ports and a weak pump and there you are. The # 4 rod bearing in mine was worn clean down to the steel outer shell.
Good luck and enjoy, they are great fun to work on.

The number 3 rod is the worst, and then #2 is the second worst one. I am in the process of pulling the engine off the torque tube. I have it on a stand now, and hopefully tonight i can roll the trycycle away, and have acess to the front of the engine, and get it off of there too. I am planning a complete rebuild on it, the head is already at the local machine shop beeng checked out. I have sent the manifold off for a weld repair.

So, hopefully soon, i will have it completely down and make a list of all thats shot.

Thanks,

Matt
