It is not my picture and it has made a few trips around the discussion boards. The picture was forwarded to me. I read that the fellow who took the picture did not get hurt and he did not blow the battery by connecting a 6 volt to a 12 volt. However, there was a group on the IH board suggesting that you could use 12 volt to jump 6 volt. They were suggesting that your battery would not blow up if you didn't connect it too long, or didn't crank the starter too long, or if you just grounded to the frame. Some of us took great exception to this dangerous advice.

I had one do this on my Volvo when trying to boost it. The basic chemistry is that a battery makes hydrogen when it is being charged. If a spark gets into it while there's still hydrogen in it - kaboom! A Battery will not usually do this if it's just been sitting for weeks. It's after it's been charging and your hooking it up that you gotta watch out.

The one time I wittnessed battery blow up was when I was operating a DC which had been converted to 12 volt. The regulator was not working properly. The battery got plenty warm and then kaboom! Not deafening as has been described but quite loud. The folks replaced the battery and got the regulator working properly. That was years ago and no such trouble since.

Actually, thanks goes to ThompsoN over on the 8N Ford board.

He's the fellow who got to sit behind that particular battery... I just sat over here on the CASE board and learned from afar!

The IH board has determined that this was a 12 volt battery therefore my point concerning 6 volts has no merit - you can lead an idiot to knowledge but you cannot make him learn!
