Fuel Gauge Case 310B Not Working

Just picked up a used fuel gauge and sender for a Case 310B. Hooked them up, but the gauge does not register the fuel level in the tank. I unhooked the wire from the tank sender and touched it to the tank (to check the ground) and the gauge needle pegged full. This made me think the sender was bad, but I took the sender in to a local shop and put it on an ohmmeter. The resistance in the sender varied from a low of about 30 to somewhere around 120 when "empty". Since the resistance varied over the swing of the float, I assume that this might mean that the sender is OK. However, I don't know what it should read to know if the resistance is too high.

Anyone have some idea as to why my gauge is not reading right?

Do you have the Steward Warner cluster panel? If so the sender is rated 33 ohms full & 240 empty (may vary some on both ends). The sender flange must be grounded.

The SW gas gauge is chassis grounded by a brass strip on the back that must be in good contact with the gauge board when mounted. To check the gauge take the wiring off. With an ohm meter there should be a resistance reading across both terminals and between each terminal and a good ground.

To check the gauge function and/or the resistance value of the sender required to operate a gauge other than SW, buy a cheap ($5) 0-500 ohm potentiometer at Radio Shack. Connect one terminal on the pot to the sender wire and the other to gnd. Connect your ohm meter across the pot. With ignition switch on, note the resistance value require move the gauge empty and full.

You probably know this. The ignition switch must be off before your turn your ohm meter on to check the pot resistance value. On some gauges you may also have to disconnect the sender wire to get an accurate reading.

When you grounded the sender lead did you do it on the sender body when it was screwed to the tank? Maybe the tank isn't grounded good enuf.

I did it to both the tank and the sender body. Both appeared to have a good ground.
