Hello Boys,

I have a SC 1944 with a exhaust leak. I purchased a new gasket through Don. But what I discovered when I took it off is that all the mating surfaces on the manifold for the exhaust ports were corroded and very uneven.

My question is this, how much do you think I could mill off of the back of the manifold to make the ports flat again?

I have a mill and only need to know if I have room to spare.

Thanks all,

Dave in wis

Looks like I will be milling away, If it doesn't work, then a new manifold is in my future

Thanks Dave

Dave Yes Bruce is right. I had mine taked down to .170 and then I took down the ferrules to. you will have to so they fit again.. Two gaskets does not work at all. Or they didn't for me. If you have a leak around the gasket it will start to burn off some of the manifold in time. Just my 2 cents worth. Elliott

Dave,

CASEPOWER has posted on the boards before out milling his manifolds, maybe he can tell you.

I (think) I've seen posts from people who have doubled up the exhaust gaskets... but I don't personally know if that works or not.

You should only have four bad mating surfaces... those two intake ports always seem to stay nice and pretty. (see below) Guess you have to mill ALL SiX down though, eh?

Dave, don't take any more than is needed. I have taken up to .080" off the manifold and had no trouble. Taking more than .100" may lead to trouble. It takes a really bad manifold to need that. If you need to take more than .100" off, you may begin to have trouble with the ferrules. They may be too long to fit in their counterbore. This will be a concerning issue, especially if this is a keresene manifold with the venturis. You could shorten the ferrules (or rework the venturis) and remove even more metal from the manifold. What the absolute limit is?? I have never found it. Good luck. Bruce
