Old Abe siting....

Today I was on my way from Thomasville, GA back to Tallahassee on County Road 59. I came around a curve and a freshly hit squirrel was still coming to a stop in the middle of the road, when down swooped a male Bald Eagle! I knew we had some in the area, and I have seen a nesting site before, but I have never seen one in the wild.

I turned around and waited maybe 20 minutes trying to get a shot with my digital camera, but "Old Abe" never showed. He was back in the piney woods munchin' on some squirrel.....

We saw one swooping over the Mississippi River east of Dubuque while bringing our new 400 home from IA. What a sight!!

Got a real treat about 10 yrs ago in late April on our lake in northern MN. The ice had just gone out & heard a couple eagles screeching over the lake. I snuck around the cabin & watched a young eagle(no white head) & an older one flying right at each other & locking talons for a couple seconds & letting go. They flew at each other a dozen or so times & grabbed each other 6 or so times. They were screeching when they did it.(that will make your hair stand on end!) I thought they may be courting but I was wrong. The last time they did it the older one got the younger one upside down & proceeded to push him straight down into the water! Then there was a screech & another eagle took off right above me & flew away with the winner of the fight. The one in the water took about 5 minutes to struggle to shore. Got out of the water 30 feet from me, shook off for 5 minutes, then took off. The way I got it figured, he just lost the chance to date that pretty chick that was waiting above me.
Kinda reminds me of myself, that's why I like old tractors, they can't choose who they spend time with:).

Matter of fact, saw a bald eagle this morning. He got breakfast out of the lake below our house. :)

Last month on my trip to Nebraska to get my Case 900 while crossing Indiana, I saw an eagle flying over the wabash river and I-74. This was an impressive and very rewarding sight. He followed along the highway for a while and I lost sight of him when he fell behind me... Gene

The Missouri River flows right through Great Falls and occasionally we see them right in the
middle of town.

Here in lower Delaware we are starting to see a few and what a treat it is to watch them. We did not have any wild turkeys in this area until about 15 years ago and they are a lot of fun to set and watch in the evenings.

Up here in God's cold country ( 25 miles east of St. Paulin Wisconsin) we have them around quite often. They are a beautiful bird when you see them in a field munching on something that didn't make it (maybe with a little help). Its quite a site in the spring when you travel down along the Mississippi river and see them perched in the trees or sitting along the river next to open water waiting for a fish lunch.

Are you anywhere near the Flambeau River where the original Old Abe came from?

Les, the Flambeau is north and east of us. We are only 25 miles east and south of St. Paul, MN. Close to where the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers join.

One time about 35 years ago, I was just a little kid, we had an eagle that passed through our farm at Grandma and Grandpa's house. They were very, very rare at that time and it was a big deal. He hung around for a day or two and then moved on. Never seen one here since that time.

Frank-

Did he grab that squirrel up off the road with an under-handed grip like THIS?

Frank,

Does that mean that I need to formally ask your permission to have all those restoration photos that I've saved of your VAC project? (grin)

Sorry Mikey...

It was an over hand grip, so he must not have been a true Old Abe relative. Well, he had to be, just maybe 5 or 600 generations ago.....

Sorry for the false alarm.... :(

Ha!
