John,

A while back you answered a question about plows I was asking if a 4-14 plow would work in my concrete soil you said a 3-16 would be better. I was asking because I found a nice 4-14 plow, I only have 7 acres and want to plow the animal pens so I have a question, would the 4-14 work if I made a couple passes with it? I also plan to add sand to loosen the soil up a bit. or would I be better off with a disk?? I am not farming I just need to keep the animal pens neat they are about 1/2 acre each. I want to till the manure in so weeds and grass grow so they can eat it. I may plant something but I don't know. The plow is also a draw bar pull so I dont know how tight of a fit it would be in those 1/2 acre pens. Thanks David

Hey David: Is the 4-14 plow cheap? If it is, sure wouldn't hurt to try it out.

John its cheap for arizona, $500 its a JD plow, has hyd cylinder and in excelent shape. I have seen them go for $200 closer to you. I may offer $300 just to have it. The mounted plow makes sense. I don't know how good those new ones are Howse has a 2-14 for $400 new and for as little as I would use it may make more sense, but you know the bigger piece of machinery looks cooler LOL!-David

David, agree with TJ about a mounted being better in tight areas and # of bottoms isn't too important for that amount of acres. Will tell you this and wish I could remember the model number but can't but Case made a 3-16 trailer type that pulled like the old stone boat. Uncle had one for a while and the 730 handled 4-14's better than the 830 handled that 3-16 plow. Finally traded it for 4-14's and was back in 4th gear again.

A too big trailor plow in a 1/2 acre field sounds miserable to me. You would be much happier with a 3 bottom mounted plow. Not only that, free puppies aren't really free!

Thanks, the plow isn't free, it's nuts here in arizona finding implements very scarce, but I will take your advise and look for a mounted plow Thanks-David
