I'm looking at buying a Case 580CK loader/backhoe.
Gas engine, 2800 hours, no ROPS. Appears to be in pretty good shape, everything works. Smokes a bit. I'm a homeowner, looking to clean up some wooded acres and general "Building the new house" kind of work. Price from dealer is $8500, which appears a bit steep to me.

What's this machine worth? What could I expect to sell it for in a few years and a few hundred more hours? Are they generally good working machines?
Any specifics to look for?

Any comments/suggestions would be most appreciated.

$8,500 IS TOO MUCH,MAYBE $5-$6,000

FOR $8,500 - $9,000 YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIND A GOOD CASE 580C OR MAYBE A 580D

Wayne: I was under the impression that if buying an older, used machine, gas engines are much easier to keep going than diesels. Your comment regarding diesel is due to higher demand for diesels or do you disagree that gassers are easier to keep going?

Thanks for your input, it truely is appreciated!

Diesels generally are percieved to have greater longetivety,(gas backhoes are older, haven't been made for years), Diesels use approx. 60% of the fuel a gas uses. Whenever a diesel has problems it is fuel related, a gas has usually ignition problems followed by fuel/carburetion problems. I wouldn't own anything other than diesel, been that way for 10 years. I'd buy a diesel weedwacker if it was available. Basically if a piece of equipment is taken care of it will last. If your backhoe is blowing blue smoke, then it is already on its way to a rebuild someday down the road. 150,000 miles on a car is a lot, but on a Kenworth it is just broken in. I'm saying in dogyears 2800 hrs on the engine is a fair amount, maybe comparable to 5000hrs on a diesel. But for occasional use I'm sure it is fine. (BTW, my machine has 2400 hrs.)It's way over priced though, you'll never get that much for it later. Check the sites I put on the last posting for other machines that you can check prices on. Some you may have to page through to find the older machines. Also check trader online:

I've got a nice 780 case diesel backhoe (22,000 lb) with cab for $10,500. It's a strong machine and two sizes bigger than the 580. It would push trees over a lot better than a 14,000 lb machine. Elkton, Maryland. I'm selling this one because I have a second one 780D.

Enough about my commercial here.
Personally I would not buy something to resell later that: 1) is not diesel, 2) does not have a ROPS or cab. You can buy a gas backhoe like that for probably $5000 or less. Probably less, something with 5k to 7k hours for $3500.
