How good were the 2870's. Were they just a 2670 with a bigger motor or was the tranny and axles beefed up too. I am interested in buying one so any info would be good.

Overall a better tractor than a 2670. Longer wheel base, bigger transmission, drive lines and planetaries. Trunions were much bigger and gave few problems even with wide spaced duals. Engine could get expensive as the scania parts are high. They had problems with the crank gear keyway getting loose changing cam timing, consequently valves made contact with pistons. Most ran 300+ on dynamometer and the engine was not even laboring. They came with the hinged hood and the same basic steering and hydraulics as a 26.

Did they have the larger diameter bolts like the 90 series did? Can the wheels be spaced for row cropping, I row crop cultivate and haul manure. I have heard of instances when your in front wheel steer and the rear wheels will drift to one direction. This would be bad because I need to pull a 8000 gal manure wagon and I don't want to get thrown in the ditch! Do they work good for row crop cultivating?

Thanks Mike b

The parts book shows the larger bolts, but I remember the early ones with small bolts. At first, they had more problems with the bearings at the rear of the powershift which damaged the oil distributer hub, but improvements in the bearings helped that. Steering is fairly accurate as long as the cables are OK. As long as it has the correct type of rims, row crop spacing is achievable.

You speak of cables? Is that what they use for steering control? Do the 90 series have electric over hydrolic controls to control steering? Or what do you mean by cables?

Thanks again

The cables coordinate the steering. They get stiff as they age. 90 series is electronic coordinated. It is more precise.
