Thanks for the quick responses will try the switch idea etc. but may have to resort to another alternator. Trial and error. Thanks again.

Chuck, If the Lamp never comes on or is very dim all the time... you may have the Voltage Sense
and the Excite Swapped.

The Excite lug will drain your battery if it is connected to the battery. The excite lug must be the one connected to the Lamp and the other side of the lamp connected to ignition switch, switched side (No voltage when switch is OFF)

Hope this Helps,

Try replacing the sensing circuit light with a toggle switch or alternately leave the light in and add the switch. After you start the engine flip the switch on to initiate field excitation. When the alt begins charging the switch can be turned off. Joe

Chuck, I just went through the same thing converting my 12 volt 530 Case from a generator to an alternator. The alternator I installed would drain the battery overnight. After trying everything I tried this.....The alternator I have had a wire connecting two plug type posts side by side on the alternator. A wire had to connect these two posts before the thing would charge. I put an on/off switch on this wire. When I park the tractor I turn the swith off. I don't know why but it stopped the battery draining.

Hey Chuck: For shame!! For converting that to 12V. However, I have discovered in the past that the alternator itself will drain the batt. Try disconnecting the batt. lead off the alt. & see if that is where the drain is. Needs rebuilding if it is the problem.

He needs to see the 12 volt conversion instructions on the YT web site. There is a protection diode that must be installed to prevent the alternator from draining the battery when it is not running.

I had the same promblem and needed to put a diode in the exciter wire. Make sure you wire the diode so the juice runs toward the alternator.
