Starting up an ole VAC

I restoring my ole "49" VAC-11 and have a few questions and need your recommendations. I know these questions have been asked in the past but I could not find the answers in the archives, poor internet connection. Therefore, I beg for your indulgence. The VAC has been sitting in the ole Arizona desert for 20 years. I rebuilt the motor, drained and filled the torque tube and the tranny/rear end. The tranny had a lot of water in the oil and the torque tube had a lot of sludge. I plan to run the VAC for an hour, to drain all oil/fluids, and to refill them with new oil. I used 15-40W in the motor, standard hydraulic oil in the tube and lightweight 90 in the tranny. So my questions are 1) Please identify the correct oil capacity for the motor, 2) Since I used standard hydraulic oil in the torque tube and now understand that the correct oil is 8 quarts of 20Wt. Should I change back to the 20Wt motor oil?

Thanks

Art, the engine sump is slightly over 4 qts, with filter near 5 qts. If you have a filter check that the oil inlet feed tube is still in there.

I use general purpose tractor hydraulic oil in the torque tube mainly for the anti-foaming additives.

Here I am Mike!

Art:

Engine crankcase capacity is 4 quarts. Not sure if this includes some for the filter or not. A little over filled won't hurt. It would take a lot of excess oil to get to the crank (you don't want the crankshaft churning the oil and foaming it).

I doubt that standard hydraulic oil versus 20wt would make any difference. I would use it. After the flush, if you wish to use 20 wt you can, but a modern hydraulic fluid shouldn't adversely affect any seals or leathers.

I'm just about ready to fire mine up, then finish up some details.

Enjoyed your web site! My wife is having a "challenging" time at her job right now. So I ran off a picture of the pup stuck between the two trees - she will like it as it fits her current situation. We like dogs and old tractors. We have the SC Case and a full blooded bassett hound. The dog doesn't like to ride the tractor.:^)

I was told that you will be better off with the hydrolic oil to. When the tractors were built there was no such thing as anti foaming hydro oil. So they used 20w for this purpose(more fluid less foam). When you do a flush I would go back with anti-foaming hydrolic oil myself "this cuts down on the wear from lack of oil when other oils foam". The cheapist place I have found is Sam's Club. We use it in the industial tractors that we work on in the local salvage yards.
