Hello all,

Still working on both brakes. Sandblasted and freed up all stuck parts. Here is the problem, I replaced both bearings and seals. How can I get the covers back on with out cutting the seals. I remember there was a fella who's Pa put the covers on and cut the seal. That differential gear that the brake hubs slide on moves around alot.

Any suggestions?
Oh yea Is there preload in this assembly when all is together.

Thanks Dave

I've only done MM brakes over a splined shaft, but similar. I used a bigger pop plastic bottle, cut out end, slit down one side to fold onto shaft tight as you can hold it, lube some and slide on seal and backplate. OR, if lucky to find one a whole, uncut bottle or alum can will fit over tight, same thing. My MM brakes didn't leak, so worked for me. Make sure you keep the shims the same or bearing pre-load and backlash may change. My MM needed a gasket of very thin, almost onion paper on back of plate also, not sure if case uses that or not. Wipe oil and grit from between each shim and on finished surfaces. Brakes are adjustable, shows how in Owner's manual if you have one, or should in IT Manual also. After it's all together.

thanks, I machined a piece to use to cover the spline. Would have saved a bunch of time if I would have just did what you suggested.

I had to remove two .005 thou shims. I replaced the bearings and had .009 thou float so zI took out .010 and left it .001 tight.
Thanks G.L. Perry
