VC will crank & run after cleaning ants out of carb & putting a new kit in it. Attempting to fix leaks in gas tank. Both gearboxes in steering mechanism have lots of play. Can these be tightened with shimming? I haven't taken them apart yet, but both are pretty loose. Thanks,Kirk

Kirk; You can unbolt the steering column from the panel and top of the transmission and pull the steering shaft out by turning it on the worm gear. After you get it out, you need to remove the cotter key from nut at the bottom of the shaft next to the worm gear and turn the nut up just enough to remove the end play from the shaft. Not too tight or you will bind on the thrust bearing. Thrust is taken on a brass thrust washer at the top of the shaft and normal wear and lack of grease wears it down and allows the worn gear to move on the shaft. While you have it apart, it would be a good idea to dismantle it and pull the shaft out and clean the shaft and bushing to allow it to turn more freely. VA series use the same setup and are tightened the same way. Before you reinstall it, turn the steering arm a half turn to let the worm gear run on new teeth on the shaft sector gear... Gene

Thanks Gene. I'll give it a try.
