There's an 1170 case coming up on auction. Are these good tractors? What should I look for? Thanks. My dad had a white 1070 when I was growing up.

Hey Clark; Speaking from experience, they are a solid tractor. But, they are over 30 years old. Like any CASE engine, they don't like ether. I always look for ether cans. You'll have to use your judgement as to tractor condition. Good Luck.

The 70 series tractors are pretty good. First what's the hours. Over 6000 look for evidence of engine or powershift work. They will go 10k plus if well looked after. Things to check are how it runs ( smooth, no big noises ) how it starts. (If it's badly worn it'll need ether) oil pressure - top of green, when warmed up. How powershit shifts - solid, has all gears. If you can, and it's been sitting for a while, loosten the crankcase drain plug and check that there's no antifreeze in the oil. The O rings on the bottom of the sleeves can leak when they get old. Bad for cranks. Thata all my ideas!

The 1170 & 1175 didn't have power shift, they had a straight 8 speed. They were solid tractors. 1170 was the series I started driving when I was 7. That was back in 1973. As far as reliable, they are as good as anything you'll ever own. If they have been maintained they were good as you can buy used. They usually sell very cheap.

Hey Men: No Power Shift on the 1170 or 1175. Straight 8 speed tranny. Very durable.
