After reading the previous posts on how many tractors we own I am left to ask how much is too much.
I have one. My plan is to own one of each color tractor that I can. When I go to my local tractor shows with my one Case and see guys making their third or fourth trip with all of thier toys I kinda chuckle. Makes me wonder if that when it is all done was it worth it? I'm sure you guys that have multiple tractors can answer that ? I know the nearest tractor show to me is 25 miles away and after hauling mine and a friends MM that I'm tired of driving. I have a neighbor that has a 40x60 shop full of tractors, with a rotating inventory at any given time. He buys them cheap and then turns around and sells them to guys like me for twice the cost. I had a pending deal with him once but waived it off after seeing a tractor I had looked at previous to his ownership that was $500 and he marked it up to $1000. This is the type of collector that I have learned to avoid.

According to my father, anyone that owns more than one should be shot. I, personally, am on the opposite end of the spectrum. I'd like to own a whole fleet.

In my opinion every antique tractor person needs at least 1,000,000 of the old ones and 1 new one just to see what to avoid. Myself I have 21 at this time and still growing. Yes the hauling is a pain sometimes but the look on kids faces is well worth it. My solution to the hauling is: 1st 2 ton chevy C-60 with a 40 ft gooseneck, 2nd A 50 model Ford 2 ton with a 16 ft bed and a 36 ft trailer, 3rd a 1 ton pickup with a 30 ft gooseneck trailer. And in the process of buying 1 semi with a 50 ft trailer and getting the option on 2 more. For me the drive to the show is half the fun as both me and my wife are retired truck drivers. Tim

The question is how many can you afford? If you have trouble affording 1 then that is too many, if you can afford 100 and take care of them then that is not too many.

My wife only allows one of each thing: one tractor, one boat, one riding lawnmower, one farm (rented out, I do not farm it), one vehicle, etc.

Does that include one wife, one mistress, one girlfriend?

No! We have an agreement about those issues. I don't do any of that or frequent "girlie" bars and she allows me to live. She does worry about me though, spending all this time on-line and making excited gasps when viewing pictures of old tractors. She thinks I am pretty demented looking at old iron instead of all the troublesome sites available on the web!

Each to his own. I, perspnally can't stand unfinished business so one or two tractors is enough for me. But I know plenty of people who see it differently. I have many interests other than tractors: family, music, reading, nature, history, socializing, motorcycles, classic cars, old pickups, general repair, woodworking, etc....Glenn F.

Its hard for me to imagine having too many.

For me I guess too many would be more than I can store. I like to keep all mine shedded. Of course, one can take a break from the tractor collecting hobby to become a barn building enthusiast for a bit, then resume with the old iron.

I think the real answer might be when it begins to require enough effort that its not fun anymore. I havent reached that point yet. I'm again in the "I need a bigger truck and trailer" phase. I hate having to leave any behind when I go to the show.

I can barely haul the two I currently show at the same time and then I only do that to the shows that are very close by. I am now in the process of trading up both in truck and trailer to make it routine to carry two large tractors farther and more safely.

I know there is a point were you could have to many tractors. But I still farm with all my restored and unrestored and new and old tractors. So by getting another tractor for me, means that I'm taking some hours off the rest of my tractors. But that also means another tractor to change the oil on, and keep after it.
