Did Case quit at one point, putting cotter pins on the connecting rod nuts?? I have taken apart many without pins that had all the shims left in. What would be the correct way to assemble a '52 DC? The pan is going on today and I still am wondering. Thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,

Hope you had a good Turkey Day.

I don't know why they would assemble an engine without the cotter pins- I can see one not being replaced when shims are removed... but you said that didn't happen.

I've got two questions for you:

1) I've got three connecting rods that LOOK like they are for a DC, but they are marked 0669AB. I don't see that in my DC parts book. According to the catalog, the DC rod is part #153AA, #3252AA or #3253AA. What number is cast on your connecting rods?

2) Where do you get new shims from? What do they look like? When you have babbit bearings repoured- don't they have to have all the shims in in order to bore the bearings to the right diameter?

Thanks, -Schotte

Mike, I have 3 groups of DC rods around and they all have the number 0669AB on them. I scavenged shims from these rods to come up with a good bunch. I used only 2 shims per side as that was all I had. Many rods are rebabbitted with no shims. This is perfectly fine, but will not allow for adjustment later. I don't remember ever adjusting the rod bearings on our DC back when we farmed with it and it will never see work like that again. I had a shop in South Dakota recon the rods. Bruce
