Just to echo what they used to say on Hill Street Blues: "Y'all be careful out there."

I use a system I learned from a friend who did industrial electric work. They ese lock outs that each person working on the machine puts their own lock on the lock plate and no one can start up without all knowing. On vehicles I put the key in my pocket. I also if it has to be left running I find some way to keep others from being able to engage anything without knowing somethings "UP Dont Operate" It only takes a couple extra seconds to be safe but accidents are permanent.

This accident happened 30 miles from where I live. My uncle lost his right hand in the combine in 1974. Really sad.

A couple of years ago I was checking the PTO shaft for noise on the SC. Reached up and pushed the clutch lever forward while looking at the PTO shaft. The tractor was in reverse and I was about 2' from the garage door. Just banged my knee but if I had shoved it all the way out it would have been grim. Emily, daughter in picture on earlier post, saw it happen and it really scared her. It is like getting shocked, it doesn't happen when you think it will. They can bite fast and it can be unforgiving. BE CAREFUL!

Good reminder Mike,
I work in the construction industry & about 10 years ago farming became the most dangerous occupation in the USA, replacing construction. It's not that the accident rate in farming is increasing, it's that the construction industry rate is constantly decreasing. I've seen all the safety devices improve thru the last 2 decades in construction equipment & also the awareness. Both my brothers farm & they do not get any of the awareness training that the construction companies are forced to give under current laws. In my opinion, farmers also work with more dangerous equipment---there are not many PTO shafts or augers in construction. And if there is, you have an instant machine shut down situation if the guard comes off. Otherwise you face big buck lawsuits. You can also get fired for not wearing your seat belt in construction & nobody is going to fire my brothers for not wearing their seat belt or not fixing their PTO shaft.
So let's everyone be very careful. A few minutes saved is not worth your injury or worse. My family has lost 6 neighbors(that I remember) over the past 35 years to farm accidents & I know that every single person that reads this site has had a close call.
Steve

Hey Mike; We never learn. I've had my share of close calls. We had some bad accidents here in NY where the farmers lost their life this year.

I'm an editor with Farm Progress magazine and am writing a farm safety story...I'm interested in hearing about the farm accidents in New York. What can you tell me about them.

Lon
