Hello,

I removed the outer housing, and I am trying to remove the linning on the tractor side. It won't budge. Also, the actuator lever didn't work when I bought it, I can't seem to get that side apart either!

HELP, I had to work on it a 6:00A.M, so my wife wouldn't get on my CASE for workin' on Sunday;)

Also where is the best place to get a detailed service manuel for a Case SC 1948 vintage.
Thanks all

Dave

In addition to rust, I think one of the things that causes the discs to stick is that they slide too far up on the shaft when the lining wears out. I put a metal chisel or something wedge shaped under the disc in several locations and keep driving them in. If the disc still won't budge, you may have to get the splined collar hot with a cutting torch to make it expand away from the shaft. I would suggest you drain down the oil before trying this. If you bend the disc a little, it can be straighted. I've rebuilt 4 sets of these. Email me if you need more advice.

Dave, if your shaft is flopping around, you are in for bigger repairs than just brakes. I'ld have to look at my manuals for SC, but on my MM's that is the shaft to the Universal set-up and there are shims under plates under brakes to adjust shaft and bearing load and play, etc. Not even sure you can get bearings out from outside case! Like I said, I'm not sure on Case, I'm kinda new to them yet myself. If you have all the clips and bolts off the brake assembly, it should mostly just slide off. Like noted, maybe all rusted up? OR, grooves worn in shaft, holding discs, from being too much play a long time? You are correct on one thing..... It's BAD to be You today! :-P

kinda sounds like the disk splines are rusted to the splined shaft could be a bear to get off but it can be done, e mail rich.tworek@cnh.com in racine he can furnish repo manuals from the original, rather resonable also dctom

Thanks all,

What about the actuator side, it seems that this side won't come apart. I have tried to pound the shaft that the foot pedal attaches to but I have had no luck. Should this assembly just fall apart, the inard workings on the hub side. I also have found that the output shaft that goes to the brake disk kindof flops around, like the bearings are bad.

Kindof sucks to be me for a while

Thanks guys, I am a green horn at this old tractor stuff, but I think I could get addicted to it.

Don't pound on the shaft you will break the small disc that is attached to the other end of the shaft. Unless I miss-counted, there are 8 ball bearings in these brakes. There are 3 just under the small disc that is attached to the shaft. The bearings are 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch in size. The large interior disc is threaded on the outside edge to allow you to adjust your brakes. You must remove the 3 exterior bolts on the brake housing to get the assembly apart. Did you get the half moon key out of the shaft?

Hi C,

I have removed the three small nuts on the inner bolt circle, the hub is already removed from the tractor. I haven't removed the small gear that does the adjusting, Does that have to come off?

If I read your post right, I have to unscrew this assembly, meaning that the portion that I have removed is threaded into the brake housing?

Thanks,
Dave

No, you don't have to remove the small gear. It's the big disc that the gear turns that you have to free up. The outside edge of it is threaded to the inside of the housing. You have to remove the shaft to get to the 3 small ball bearings.

Correction, the disc is not threaded into the exterior brake housing. It's threaded into the plate that the 3 exterior bolts go into. It's sort of like one disc turning inside another.
