I see a 1951 LA propane listed on the auction. According to the seial number 5523090 it's a 1951. I didn't think Case provided a propane till 1952. Can anyone correct me on this.
Thanks

I have found many discrepancies between what the reference materials indicate should be correct and what they actually sent out the door. If you monitor some of the posts to dctom, you will notice that many tractors have a serial number indicating a year that does not match the build card, being off by one year is very common.

There are two LA propane heads, one has a number beginning with 5, the other begins with 6. I have been told that the 5xxx head is the Case retrofit head and the 6xxx is the factory propane head. This seems to be true from the tractors I have observed. Maybe dctom, John S., or Don L can provide better info, just relating what I have seen.

not a discrepancy, case fiscal year ended october one, which means end of model year, tractors built oct, nov, and dec. were of the next years model, tom

I know where there is a 1951 LA in Kansas that I am sure came from the factory that way. I'll get the serial number at Christmas and then we can have dctom check it out. I grew up right across the fence from this tractor and didn't know it was a 51 model until aout 6 years ago. (I'm in
Montana but my mother lives in my hometown) I
had always believed LP came in in 1948 or 49.

It is either a factory retrofit or an aftermarket kit. Case supplied a kit to change gas tractors over to propane that included everything you needed along with a complete 20+ page booklet of instructions. The special propane head was extra though. Other manufacturers had kits also and it seems most owners didn't bother to get the LP head so they probably lost some HP in exchange for the cheap fuel they got. In 1953 LP gas was .06/gallon.

You are correct but there was a factory field conversion avalible. The best way to tell is if has Case part numbers on the propane related parts. Carb, regulator and tank probably would't have these but brackets and other items should

Jim,
I picked up a couple of 900's in the Crawford country. Got me a W-400 diesel north of Alliance. Seems so be a few of them standards in that part of the country. If the LP is for sale email me.
Thanks for all the reply guys.

I converted a 1948 gas LA(my dad bought it new) to propane in 1956. I bought all from my case dealer. I bought the head also(Gave it more power than Gas) and tank. At the same time I put in new sleeves and pistons. I than painted it two tone Desert Sunset and Flambeu. I did all the work and it cost me $400.00
By the way propane in 1956 cost .09 a gallon. I still have a 900 on LP
