Could I get some advice on how to replace the axel seals on my 1951 VAC? Im in the process of redoing the clutch, brakes, seals around the brakes, etc. and would like to get at least the one hemorrhaging axel seal, but I dont really see how to even start on it. The other work is pretty straight forward, easy to figure out what to do even if it is somewhat of a process.

Barry:

According to my parts book, the seal is the outermost item on the axle, and it seats in the very end of the axle housling. So, you have to remove the wheel hub, and pry that seal out from the outside, clean the area, maybe emery the axle to clean and smooth it, and press (tap gently with a flat steel and a small hammer) a new one in there. Be sure to put a bit of grease inside the lip of the new seal so it has some lubrication so the lip won't dry wear a groove on the axle.

Thank you. I was afraid that you were going to say something like that. Where the axel comes out of the housing there appears to be a shield of thin sheet metal set back in about three eights of an inch. To pry this out is not going to be pretty. Maybe some drilling, prying. On the side that doesnt leak, this shield looks very neat. On the side that needs work its not so nice. I know that I cant make the leak any worse.
Thank you again for the quick answer.

Barry:

That tin shield is probably the seal itself (now it COULD be a felt retainer, but I have to go and do some more looking). Now something you might try would be to punch a couple of small holes in the tin shield and use a slide hammer with one of those sheet metal screw ends, and I'll bet it'll pop right out of there.

Thank you again. I probably wont start on that until I get the clutch back in and the tractor back in one piece. The family says that it looks like the magician saws a woman in half trick right now, and I am reluctant to jack up the back and wrestle around a tire and star with it unstable. Ill let you know if I find anything unusual.
