I know you guys don't come here to get preached to about safety, but I spent my afternoon getting a farmer out of his corn picker. His arm was caught in the rollers of an old New Idea corn picker and he is now in the hospital. Please be careful out there, when trying to free clogs or any other task, or just around the shop. I don't want anyone to have to talk tractors from the hospital.

Fireman in KY, getting off the soapbox now...

Yup dad lost a leg in 72. Damn pto gaurd on a hammer mill was missing and he got a pantleg caught. Took over a year to get enough meat to attach an artificial leg to. Changed our way of farming, no more livestock operations. It did pull a community together, but a very nice way to do it. Flipped my tractor over on a hillside a few years back, scared the crap outta me. Coulda been bad but the backhoe stopped it from going right over, one a them 9 lives used up that day. We all need to slow down sometimes but do we listen..... ....

Things can happen so quickly. In January 2002, I was unloading my s from my trailer and I touched the right brake to slow it a little. The tractor
veered to the right and the front wheels came off the ramps. I ended up with the front axle resting on the left ramp and my rear wheels on the trailer dec. My friend who was spotting said he saw 6 inches between the left rear tire and the deck. Why it didn't go over, I'll never know.

Yesterday something similar happened up at Whitefish MT and the woman wasn't so lucky. The
tractor ended up on top of her.

Hi
I'm an Ambo in Australia as well as a farmer. I know first hand how easy it happens. Lost four toes of my right foot when I was 12, got caught in harvester gears. Neighbour lost foot in harvester grain bin. Friend had arm wrapped around pto shaft for 9 hours, responded to a bloke who short circuted his starter motor when the key switch failed and he ran himself over. Almost cut finger off employees hand in grain auger and tried to run him over 12 months later. Five year old child killed locally when run over by tractor.Have responded to chainsaw accidents, impalements, motorcycle accidents and a sprayplane crash in my own paddock, haven't had to respond to farm related death as yet.
Please be careful, not only does it affect the victim, it affects the rescuer's as well. Imagine having to deal with nighmares from the last body you had to scrap up. I have dealt with too many vehicle accidents fatalities in my ten years as a volunteer ambulance officer. I can still remember every one. Not much fun. Please be careful.

Safety can never be preached enough. It's that time of year when people should slow down around machinery during harvest. EMS was running crazy today. Guy almost cut his leg off with chain saw. 2 years ago we had a guy get pulled into a cotton stripper auger and he didnt' get to tell about it later.

A friendly reminder about safety doesn't hurt any of us, I know at one time or another we all get a little careless and don't think about what can happen around machinery. Hope your neighbor recovers fully.

I should mention that the gentleman was finished picking the field when this happened. The helicopter ambulance crew think his hand will be saved, let's hope so.

It cannot be said enough! My uncle lost his right hand in the combine in 1974. However, his spirit was not lost and he ran the corn picker before the harvest was over that year. He farmed until his death (cancer) in 1998. I hope your neighbor recovers and we pray for him and his family.

I second that, heavy machinery knows no mercy, Ive spent the last 2 months mending from a shoulder broken in 10 pieces, doing something I knew better than to do. Used up one of my nine lives in that one. I have been around heavy equipment for 20 years did 1 stupid thing..... I will heal 100% this time. There will be no next time. Safety is #1 nothing else matters. My 2 cents-David
