I am in the process of refinishing my VAO and was wondering if anyone knows if there are seats available. The orriginal had a horse hair (I think) cushion on the back and the seat had horse hair covering a rubber inflateable cushion.
Thanks for any help

Howdy... I do not have the cushioned seat but just found and purchased a pan VAO seat and bracket from a place in California... their number is 800-344-9494... cost was $75.00 plus shipping I can pass along part numbers too if necessary.

I was lucky the seat frame (and rotten old kitchen chair cushion) came with the tractor and I can see it saved me $75. I used to bang my back against the sheet metal frame when the governor cut in before I crudely fabricated a cushion and backrest. Slowpoke came up with some info on the cushions and if someday I can find a picture I'll get mine as close to original as I can. Not as many VAO owners but plenty enough to figure this seat cushion out, if I find anything out VAO I'll be sure to post, thanks.

You are the first to identify the possible original material, and I will admit horse hair cushion covers was not a fabric I could have thought of, but it may establish why none of the originals exist. I'm a VAO owner and would be interested in any followup you might offer about the horse hair covers and where that info came from. If you check the archives I earlier posted a couple persons who have helped me with finding VAO parts. Good Luck.

The inflateable bag was inserted in the center of the square cushion, thru a slot in the front edge, midway between top & bottom. The cushion was about 2-1/2" thick. The filler material could be the horsehair mentioned, but the cover probably was heavy canvas or fabric supported vinyl.

Makes more sense now, and with the inflateable element it is likely that exact reproductions are not forthcoming. I fashioned cushion and backrest from vinyl and car seat foam about 2 inches thick, tacked to old plywood, utilitarian but resonably comfortable considering I don't operate for long periods. I assume the originals would have been made of a durable heavy vinyl or canvas and likely piped at the top corners, would love to see a picture of an original someday. Thanks for the info.

Ted, the large square cushion and oblong backrest are for tractors before 5450500. Maybe it was an option. After that, only a pan seat is used. There are three different seat support assemblies. One uses 2 rubber springs, one uses a long arm with a verticle steel spring, and one uses 4 short arms with a horizontal spring. The square cushion frame does not look like it fits any of the three support assemblies, and there is nothing showing how it mounts on the tractor. It does look like there are rails under the frame for adjustment.
If I remember correctly, my stuck VAO is a '45. It has a deteriorated highback from a car, but I haven't looked to see how it's mounted. Maybe the original mounting parts were used. In any case, it should be fairly easy to duplicate the old frame, seat, and backrest.
BTW, I occasionaly visit friends in Antelope. In what area of Sacramanto are you located?

My serial # is 5257680 and I do have the cushion/ backrest original seat frame, it is on rails (kind of an inverted channel) and bolted to the transmission and transfer case. No springs of any kind, thusly the need for the inflateable cushion insert for comfort. Antelope is just down the Interstate, maybe 8 to 10 minutes East from me, let me know if you get close.

Ted, after looking at the book again and reading your post, it seems there is no adjustment on the VAO seat; the frame is just bolted to the tranny thru a hole on either side at the front. The rails would stick out at the rear for fastening.
The air cushion looks like a hot water bottle having a small diameter hose in place of the cap and about 6" long. Blow it up by mouth.
