My SC tractor had one rubber gas tank pad, with ribs to match the metal base, and a wad of cardboard for the other one. Is this part out there? or can someone give me an idea of a substitute? Will it slip out if I used just a rubber strip w/out the ribs? Is there new web like pads for the hood also? I think mine can be re-used if cleaned up, they are very dusty/dirty is all, but just checking on what's used for new now days.

I've used gasket material. It's a little thinner than the original leather, but is durable and doesn't seem to be affected by gasoline like some of the rubber (inner tubes, etc.). I usually just hold it in place with some well placed (hidden) plastic straps.

I made mine for my DC from 1/4" thick neoprene that I had.

Case Gas Tank Pads; If your handy with sharp chisels or gouges and a stump or large hardwood block you can create a decent set of pads from the sidewall of a car tire of your choice. You can smooth off the outside edge of your custom
pads with a pedestal sander or other arrangement.
Good luck in your project(s).

I cut strips off the edge of a truck mudflap and its worked great so far.

I have been mounting my LA tanks on pieces of cut up serpentine belt. I keep the old belts when I replace them on the car and trucks. They are very durable and the little ribs keep moisture from collecting under the tank where it sits on the mount.

I usually just cut up an old rubber tire inner tube and place it under the gas tank the full width and length of the contact area. If you don't cut it too big, it won't show. If you are worried about it slipping out you can put a little silicone on it to stick it down.

I think there were only two strips of leather under the gas tank originally - one front and one back.

There was also a pad (horsehair?) between the radiator, tank & underside of the hood I think... but I've never run across one on any of my SCs.

I once found a leather strap INSIDE my gas tank when I was boiling it out. Trust me- that pad does absolutely NO GOOD on the inside of the tank... (grin)
