I have a 4890 with poor brakes ( some but not like they should be!) how difficult to fix this and how expensive? Thanks, Ed

I just worked on one of those a few weeks back. If you'll look on the back of the transmission where the driveline comes out, the brake is in behind there. There's a lever and a brake cylinder up above where the rear driveline comes out of the transmission, and there's an adjusting nut on it. I'd suggest that you first have somebody work the brake pedal while you have a look at that lever- it shouldn't move more than 1/2" or so at the brake cylinder. There'll be a cheesy self-adjuster setup on it, but they rarely work once they get old and rusty, so the brakes may need adjustment. If tightening them up doesn't help, then the linings may have come apart. To get them out, you remove the rear driveline, and you'll probably have to remove a pipe from the trans. filter that's in the way. Remove that heavy cover on the back of the trans and the brakes are in behind that. The linings had come apart on the one I worked on a while back- the surfaces in the housing and on the cover looked pretty nasty, but the customer got used discs and actuator and had me put it back together, and it stops like a new tractor... hard to say how long those discs will last though.
