I need to change the transmission and final drive oil. The manual I have states that I should use s.a.e. No.90 multi-purpose type lubricant. I asked my Dad and he thought that that the Case Dealer had told him to use High-trans Hydraulic fluid. Does anyone have any suggestions about which one I should use?? Thanks for any Help.

Yes most Case dealers will tell you to replace it with hytran. I do agree with hytran in the tranny of the 511b. I also disagree with John on his 85w/140. IF the original manual calls for 90w, well 80/90w will do the same and serve just as well as 90w. I thought they called for type A in the transmission? I don't see how anyone can work one of these antiques hard enough to needing a operating temperture that high. We run 80/90w for years in our old farmalls with out a problem. There were many winters we had to add diesel fuel to the transmission so that the tractors would move. Just think how stiff 85/140 would of been. I don't know how many of you have compared trying to pour 80/90 vs 85/140 at -30F, I'd bet on the 80/90w oil. As for as people saying there seals have quit leaking using 85/140 I wonder if oil is getting to where it needs to be. My .05 worth.

For Transmission and final drive I believe the 90 weight is the way to go. The torque convertor is the hy trans oil. I do not have my manuals with me, so if I am wrong someone will let me know, but I believe that is the way to go.

Hey John & Tim; The CASE dealer is flat wrong. For the best lubrication of that trans-dif, use SAE 85W140. Multi-grade gear lube wasn't around when that tractor was built, and it offers better protection than 90, and far superior to Hy-Tran. When cold it offers the flowability of an 85, yet when hot it offers the protection of an 140.
