Positive or Negative ?

I have a 51 VAC with 6 volt battery and negative ground. When I bought the VAC someone had put an alternator on it with a voltage reducer to 6 volt.

Now I just bought a 52 VAC and it has a 12 volt battery with a positive ground and looks to be original generator.

Should the 51 be negative ground ?
Should the 52 be positive groung ?
I am confused maybe some converted the 52 to 12v ?
How would I know if it has been converted? I cannot find any markings on the generator or the coil as to how many volts they are.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Barry

My 51 VAC was delivered with 6 volts and positive ground. I converted to 12 volts by replacing the light bulbs, inserting a dropping resistor in the coil circuit and adding a separate switch for the lights. I kept the original generator and replaced the cutout relay with a 12 volt version. The generator will charge about 10-15% over the exication voltage supplied. Since the rate of charge is controlled by the old 3 position "light" switch I never have to put it in any position but the lowest one. That is why I use a separate light switch because if I use the lights "on" position on the 3 way switch, the generator charges too much. I have considered using some modern 12 volt negative ground items but as yet have not bothered. To do so I would need to repolarize the generator. My 12 volt "cutout relay" is really a 40 amp solid state diode in the charge line. Its only purpose is to prevent the battery from discharging through the generator when the tractor is not running. I have since replaced the old 6 volt coil with a 12 volt one so have discarded the resistor. If I every switch to an electronic ignition I will convert to negative ground as there is a greater selection of units available. Hope all this rambling helps. Lew Van Vliet Wisconsin
