'52 SC with wide front. I will be doing a lot of trail work opening up old logging roads but will be doing some open areas as well. What size will the SC handle and what other features should I be looking for. I'm a newbe and can't wait to get going!

Hey men!! With a '52 "SC" Crispin should have Live PTO & that over-running clutch isn't necessary.

I understand the concept of the mower inerta continuing through the PTO but I don't get the part about driving the tractor. Were these guys talking about the PTO clutch or the drive clutch being overrun. If my hand clutch disengauges the engine from the rear, then how does the PTO overrun the rear?

The drive clutch disengages the engine from the tranny. If a mower is turning and you pull the clutch the inertia from the mower continues to turn the PTO, spinning the tranny and pushing the tractor forward. Tractors with "live" or "independant" PTO basically have a drive system seperate from the tranny. Personally I liked the PTO on our old JD 430, push clutch half way to disengage tranny, all the way to disengage PTO.

I hope I haven't muddied the water more. Good luck.

Where is the lever to engage the PTO. If it's up on the shift cover, you need the over running clutch. If it back by the seat its live PTO and you don't need it.

I have a 5 ft. one on mine. A 6 ft. one might be ok in light stuff. Make sure you buy one of those overrun clutches to attach to your tractor PTO shaft. They are around $60.

Yes to that over running cluth on the PTO. If you are new: the reason is with the mower running, you pull the cluth and the mower keeps the tractor going forward until it slows down. Some times not very nice if there is some thing ahead of you.

It also allows you to change gears while the mower blades are still turning without scraping the gears.

My friend's ran great with a 5 ft JD this summer. I would not hesitat to put my 6 ft bush hog on it. Limit might be lift of weight and holding front end down.

Weel I'd stick with a 5 on a SC. Unless your just mowing lawn grass. I stall my 830 once in a while with a 6 footer, when BushHog says 2-3" in trees they also say 10 hp per foot. My rule is if I can push it over I can mow it.
