I have just changed the brakes on my '50 case sc and found out the seals were bad. I drained all the oil and was going to put new back in. What type of oil would you guys recommend putting back into the tractor once the seals are replaced. This is not the engine oil it is the oil that came out from inside the brake seals and gears.
Thanks
Joel

80/90 gear oil will work just as good if not better. 85/140 is good if your just running it in summer time, it gets awful stiff in the cold.

Hey caseman; That is not my experience with the 85w140. It is multigrade just like engine oil. In cold weather it has the flowability of an 85w, the "w" meaning winter use; and in the summer heat it has the protection of a 140.

"W" meaning winter use? W is the weight of the oil in the product the second number is the Viscosity of the product when warmed to operating temp. You have an 85 weight gear oil with plastic polymers added until a Viscosity of 140 at operating temp. is acheived. The molecules of the plastic polymer are coiled at low temperatures but at higher temps they straighten allowing them selves to "stack" and increasing the viscosity of the fluid.

One more quick comment. On my old SC the seal for the belt pulley would spit just a little before I changed the rear-end lube. With the 85W140 it dried up.

John's suggestion is 100% correct. The first winter that I had my SC in real cold weather I would get a bearing squeal in the transmission related to engine RPM. After draining the old crud out I flushed mine with kerosene and got even more crud out. Refilled with 85W140 and have not had a bit of noise the last three winters. It shifts better too. The manual calls for 90W in cold weather and 140W in warm weather. They must have put all that used oil in hog oilers back then!

Hey Joel; An excellent choice of lube would be an 85w140 gear lube. Hope this helps.
