This might sound dumb, but I need to know where the oil filter is located in my Case S 1949 model. Think it might be behind the cover on the oil pan but don't want to pull things apart until I know whats behind them. Was an oil filter an option on this tractor like on the VAC? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Filters were an option on SCs. If the pan is like the SC (most likely it is) take of the cover with the three bolts and you will see the screen. If you have small hands (like me - I can't decide if it is a blessing or a punishment) you can get a shop rag into the bottom of the pan and clean the sludge out of it. I committed the awful sin of using gasoline (HORRORS!) to clean mine. (smoking not recommended during this procedure) Leave the bottom drain plug out while cleaning and you may remove 50 years of crud from the pan. Or, it does not look to tough to drop the pan but then you have to worry about the gasket. Good luck!

Chris, there is a screen behind a cover on the side of the pan. It has three bolts that secure it. You can take it out and clean it. Just drain the oil, remove the bolts and slide it out. Some had canister oil filters on the right side of the engine. Bruce

Chris,

I don't know about the "S", but here's where the filter is on an SC (when equipped with one):

Sorry for the crappy picture- but it's the only one I've got showing the filter cannister.

I'm not sure when they became "standard" equipment. My '45 doesn't have a filter, my '49s do.

My '44 SC does not have a filter either. I was a little concerned until I learned that the filters were optional on these tractors. Since the filter patches into the oil pressure gauge feed line isn't only a "trickle effect"? Do you think a filter helps? Of course you know from previous discussion mine burns off enough oil that it really doesn't matter. Just thinking ahead in "Case" of future engine overhaul.
