Will this work? I have a CASE 284 LP Gas engine out of a CASE combine that I am going to build for a tractor pulling engine. I don't want it to be a radical rebuild. I just want a little more power. Here's what I'm thinking about. Bore the 284 block to accept the sleeves from a 336 diesel and use flat top pistons from a Moline 504 LP engine. Change it over to gasoline and run a carb. from a 930 CASE. I have two major concerns. (1) How will I find a head gasket that will work? (2) What is the distance from the wrist pin to the top of the piston on the Moline 504 Pistons? SOMEONE HELP! Where can I find the answers to these concerns?

Yes it will work. I think the mm is the same stroke so rod length is ok it will be the wrist pin that you will need to rework. As far as the head gaskets use 504s. You just wont use one head bolt hole in the gasket. Thad

Thad,

The 504 is a 6 cylinder and my 284 is a 4 cylinder. Could I use the head gasket from a Moline 336 LP engine? It's the same bore as the 504 Moline. The 336 is a 4 cylinder.

You need to get sleeves from a early 336 or 504. Get head gaskets that are for the early sleeves. The bolt pattern on the 30s blocks is the same as the 70s except they added one more bolt on the 70s. You just wont use it. I know of some of theese running and they run pretty good. Thad

Thad,

Are you talking about head gaskets from a 336 Case or a 336 Moline? The Case 336 was a Diesel and I think it had several more head bolts. Did Case make a 336 LP or Gasoline? I've only seen Diesel in Case literature. I know Moline made a 336 in LP and Gasoline. Is this the gasket that will work?

Use the case gaskets it only has one more bolt. Your heads have 9 bolts the later heads run 10. Yes the 336 was only a diesel. The only parts you use other than case will be the pistons. Thad

Thad,

Thanks for all your help. Do you know if the distance from the wrist pin to the top of the piston is the same? Is the wrist pin the same size or will I have to machine them to fit?

The stroke in the mm is the same as the case. So the piston distance should be the same. As far as the wrist pin I think it is closest to a 930s pin size. I could find out for sure later. Thad

The head gaskets are for 2 cylinders each as are the heads. You need one for under each head so if you use a 504 kit you'll have a extra gasket.
