Possible Case 660 Combine Project... Advise Needed

I recently located a Case 660 Combine (4 cyl. gas engine) not far from our 15 acre farm that I can collect for free. It has a 5" dia. tree growing up through the corn head, so it's been sitting there a while. The bean head is laying on the ground nearby amidst piles of other junk.

It appears to be pretty complete, and has not yet sunk into the ground far enough for the lower sheet metal to touch (and rot). The auger pipe is rusted out on the bottom, though.

I'd be interested in opinions on whether this is a worthwhile project to undertake. Are parts still available for the 660? Ultimately, I'd like a small combine that I can use on several acres of corn/wheat/oats - is the 660 suited to that kind of usage? (I'm still learning farming, having moved to the midwest from the Atlanta, GA suburbs a couple of years ago).

Would also appreciate any suggestions on restarting the engine after it has sat so long (should I determine it's worth a go).

Thanks for any suggestions/input...

Thanks for all the good advice! Sounds like I might be better off purchasing a running older combine, although I wouldn't want to spend more than around $500 for one at this point in time (remodeling the hou$e).

I might take a battery and some tools down just to see if I can get the engine to turn and better determine the condition. I'll post over in the Combines section, too.

Thanks again,

es

If you want a combine to use you would be money ahead to buy a working one. I saw on older IH in good working order with both heads sell for $600.00 about a month ago. If you just want a project it might be fun, go for it.

Last spring I bought a 660 at an estate auction. Got it for scrap price. It had sat in a dirt floor shed for 30 plus years! Motor turns ! Then this summer a friend spotted a 660 with both heads . It too is setting at my place. It runs excellant , drove it about 15 miles home. The lights all work, even the red light in the rear lamp!! I'll find out in a couple of weeks if it was worth bringing home, beans are comming on fast! These machines were good in there day and now are good to play with, but parts are almost impossible to find. You almost need another parts machine for repairs! But it sure is neat to see one of the oldies working in the fields!!! Ther are many Deere 9500's out there but how many old Cases do you see??

As someone with a case 600 combine project I'll let you know what I think.

The case 660 was fine combine in its day. Small enough to move on gooseneck. It has a 40 cylinder, which is huge for 2-row combine. Case also made a bunch of them, and many are still running. It is open and easy to work on.

Case does not support it for parts. You are on your own.

A combine that sets out in the weather for any length time will turn into junk. This is something that you will have to judge.

From the sound of it the person should give it to you for free.

The engine will fit in most of the smaller case tractors and backhoes, the VAC, Case 300b, Case 400B... Case 430 etc...

Folks just about have to give away running gas combines. But it you are only going to do a few acres who cares if you use 3 gal or 5 gal of fuel?

If you do not save the combine who will?

By the way you should start this on the combine page. Tractor people bless them but they do not give combines the respect they should get.

The combine was and is the most expensive and most important piece of equipment on the farm. If you do not get the crop in from the field everything you did is a waste.

If you have shucked corn by hand you will love your old combine.

PS I am looking for Corn head and parts...But I move very slowly it has taken me years to get them moved, but Rome was not built in a day

Good luck...
