Case 511b Power Steering Question

Hello all,

My dad recently purchased a Case 511B from a nearby vendor. My dad has always been a big fan of Cases, but he is not too familiar with the 500 series, and neither am I.

The tractor that we purchased has a pump for power steering, and it appears that the pump works. However, the fluid lines go nowhere but back into the pump. We attempeted to find out where they connected, but were unable to do so.

Does anyone know where the connection are for the power steering fluid lines? We would greatly appreciate it if some one could help us out, or send us a picture of a working 511 (or similiar tractor)

Thank you!

Ben Boese

I know where there a couple of 511bs in a tractor junkyard. They have the power steering pump attached to the engine. The lines go down to a power steering hydraulic cylinder and sensor that is part of the steering linkage. Takes the place of a regular drag-link. Very similar to what Ford cars used as power steering in the 60s. A lot of big road tractors also use this system.

Hi Ben, a little more info please: Is the pump mounted on the right front of the engine and driven by the engine gear train? Is there a hydraulic motor mounted in the steering shaft just aft & under the engine carb? Joe

Hey Joe,

Yes, the pump is mounted on the right front of the engine, just back of the fan. As far as we could tell it was hooked up fine.

There is no heydraulic motor on the steering shaft. My dad had done some research on it before and thought that that was what had been missing. The prevoious owners may bave taken off the old steering shaft and replaced it with a new, non-hydraulic one. But then again we were just guessing.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben, I have that setup on my 311B. The pump is a Barnes spurgear type. They are obsolete and it is nearly impossible to find a good used one so keep that loop on there for circulation and the reservoir topped up. Oil should be ATF (dexron).
The motor is/was a Char-lynn torque multiplier (AKA gerotor, orbit) and is still avail new for about $400. Post or email if you need more info. Joe
