430 parking brake question

The parking brake on my 430 appears to be only a small lever with teeth attached to the brake pedal. Because of my physical geometry (short) it is very difficult to hold the brake down and reach down and hold the little lever in place as the brake is pushed and released.

Questions: Is the little lever all there is to the parking brake or is my 430 missing something--like a spring or something else?

Is there some technique for setting the brake that I have not discovered?

Has anyone done a modification to this mechanism that makes it easier to set?

Thanks in advance

Someone put a light chain on mine(up to a bolt near the dash) To set, tug the chain. To release, kick the toothed lever out of the way. A REAL farmer would have used bubble gum and baler twine.

thanks to both for your suggestions. I experimented by drilling a hole in the flat part of the top of the lever for attaching a string. I ran a heavy string up to the hole for the battery cover screw.( i don't have a battery cover, but would like to find one) This seems to work ok. definitely safer.

The factory design was pretty poor in my opinion.

I will probably replace the string with a light chain after I try it for a while.

Thanks again.

No, a real farmer would put an extension on the lock lever. My Grandfather had me extend the one on his (now mine) 631-L 35 years ago. he was gettin old and could'nt hold the pedal and reach down and lock it at the same time. And kick the brake pedal NOT THE LEVER to release the brake or you'll most likely break it.
