I've got a replacement sleeve on the way for the 148 I have in the 440H. ( I had no luck finding the oversize piston so decided to go back standard) The only other sleeve I've ever put in was a dry type in a Ford. I'm told that this one has o rings. Any helpful hints out there for removal and installation?

The other guys' advice is excellent. I might add that you would want to consider a "dry run" installation without the rings. This is to make sure that everything fits properly and will save ruining the ring(s) if you do have a problem. Often the corrosion that accumulates near the seal area is so hard that you cannot tell where the corrosion stops and the iron or steel starts and you may need to do more cleaning. I installed some LA sleeves that did not fit well on the dry run and I wound up using a chipping hammer to remove corrosion just above the ring grooves. It was so hard that the wire wheel I had used to clean them had just polished it, but when I worked it with the hammer, rust flew everywhere.
Be sure and check the "stand up" of the sleeve above the deck. Lay a good straight edge across the top of the sleeve, and slide feeler gauges under the edge to check the gap. You service manual should have the spec, usually it is .001 to .003 inches, but check your book, don't rely on my memory.

Installing Sleeves
1. While handling sleeves, stam them on end,do not drop or lay on sides as distortion may result.
2. Thoroughly clean the upper and lower counter bores.
3. Install new rubber packing rings before installing sleeves in block.
4. Coat the rubber rings as well as the lower portion of the sleeve and the lower block bore with Vaseline. DO not use vaseline in grooves of sleeve.
5. Place sleeve in bore and give a quick twist as it is pressed into position. This will start the rubber O-rings into the bore.
6. Tap sleeve firmly into position with wooden mallet. Top shoulder should protrude .001 - .004 inch above machined surface of block.
7. Pour a small amount of water into block to determine wether there is any leakage around the rubber O-rings.
Engines that have had new cylinder sleeves and pistons installed should be given the same consideration that is given to a new engine.Always use SAE#10 oil for starting. For the first 50 hours run at half load or less before going to full load.
Hope this helps

I have a sleeve puller that I use for removal. It seems to work really well. Make sure you clean the interior of the engine really well before installing a new one. It would probably make it easier if you put the new sleeve in the freezer to shrink it down as much as possible before installation. Might want to put a little grease on the edge of the O-ring, so that the sleeve will easily slide past it. Also might want to put some sealant under the top lip of the sleeve. If you don't have access to a press, you will probably have to tap the new sleeve in with an wooden block and hammer.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes. Sleeve should be in dealers stock order next week. Bill
