Nicholas:

I have been using electrolysis cleaning for about two years now. I'm still using the same old 10-amp 6/12 volt charger that I started with. Only thing I had to do was to replace one clip on the red wire because I had it connected under water and of course it rusted. Now I connect through alligator jumper leads that are easier to replace. I use 18 ga stainless sheet for the electrodes as it lasts much longer than common cold rolled steel, but any old thing containing iron will work for sacrificial electrodes.

I use Lye and washing soda (NOT BAKING SODA!). I like the washing soda because it is cheap, but I think the sodium hydroxide (Lye) does a faster job on removing paint and emulsifying grease and oil.

I have never used a better/cheaper process! I have a large pressure sand blaster and an 8HP compressor, and I have not had to blast anything in over a year. I have the two front wheels from my VAC in the tank right now. In 24 hours or less, they will be oil, paint, and rust free, ready for primer and paint.

I have some technical information on electrolysis posted on my website if you need more info.

I have been using washing soda only. Had not heard of using lye. What is the advantage of using lye? Do you mix it with the washing soda? What ratio? Thanks.

Rob:

Use in the same proportion as the washing soda. You can make the mix all lye, all washing soda, or anywhere in between. I find that lye speeds it up a bit and cuts through the grease and old paint faster.

It's perfectly safe for you charger as long as you DON'T LET YOUR CATHODE AND ELECTRODE TOUCH! I was cooking an old griddle and they touched when I was turning it over. Pegged the battery charger out pronto, and I thought I'd cooked it. Ended up I threw the breaker, so I didn't lose the charger. But it was close...

The charger I use (Wal-Mart type)has a fairly quick internal auto re-set breaker. If you let the anode and cathode touch, it's no different than letting the two clip leads touch while using it for battery charging. A ground fault interupter might make you feel safer. Just keep the GFI dry. They tend to go bad when exposed to the elements.
