I went to look at this tractor again. Had been told was an 880, but when I looked closer is a 1200 Selectamatic. Has loader, overall looks pretty good. Paint and decals are faded, has good rubber. Has signs of a water leak on rear of block, below the head gasket but doesn't appear to be coming from head gasket. Is there a freeze plug on back of block in this area?
Are there any problems that are common to this tractor that I should be looking for? They are asking $4500, may be able to knock that down some. Haven't heard it run yet.
I'm looking for a tractor that I will be keeping for a long time, trying to consolidate to just one tractor again. Will the parts situation be a problem with a David Brown? I've always really liked these tractors, but don't want to buy something that I can't get parts for down the road.

Elmer probably has better insights, but on ours, the trouble spots have been the PTO clutch throwout mechanism (pivoting parts inside clutch housing wear to the point clutch is unusable) drive shaft to hydraulic pump chews out hubs and no hydraulics, and early style timing gear set in engine broke gears and trashed power steering pump and a couple valves & push rods. I don't know if this was just us or if some of these items were common to the 1200 model, but if we knew this before we got the tractor, probably would have passed on it. We have owned a 990 from new for 35 years and it's been just the opposite, you couldn't ask for a more reliable tractor. For what it's worth.

After hearing that I think I'll stay away from it. Will probably stick with something that's still in production. I hate to do it, but will probably go JD or Ford as they have good dealers locally. Still would prefer a Case though.

Every make has its lemons. I know of 1200's that made it from 12,000 to 20,000 hours and gave good reliable service.
