David Brown Fuel Flow Problem

I have a DB990A which keeps getting clogs in the sediment bowl. The fuel cap was missing for a few years and it just had a rag in the opening. I recently replaced the fuel cap, but what appears to be mud keeps clogging up the mesh screen filter in the bowl on the fuel pump. I have flushed the tank out as much as I could with a hand sprayer, spraying diesel into the tank. And tried to be careful to only pour clean diesel back into the tank. Although it took longer (3 hours) to clog up this time, it still clogged. My question is "Can I just remove the little screen filter and let the regular fuel filters catch the muck for a little while?" & "Does old diesel fuel chunk up enough to clog a screen filter even though it runs in the tractor fine?" Thanks for any help

Thanks for the info in the replies. I don't use the tractor for anything important, just bush-hogging a little bit, so even if it does clog up a time or two more, it will still be easier for me to just clean the screen filter, rather than replacing the tank. I think I will replace the fuel with new and put the additive in it. If it keeps being a problem, I may have to step back and re-evaluate the tank replacement option.
Thanks Again, Barry

Replace the tank as Elmer says then throw away the old fuel. Use good, clean, fresh fuel. Also, add Shell DFA product. It replaces water, lubs the pump, lubs the injectors, cleans the fuel system, raises the cetane rating by 3 numbers, prevents gelling, eases starting, etc. Available everywhere, even at Walmart. I don't put a single drop of diesel in any of my tractors without the treatment added. Have NEVER had a tank sediment, rust, gelling, etc.

It may be easier to replace the tank. If you remove the screen it will get mud in the reed valves and the pump will die. Where are you located. I have a tank here.
