440H piston problem

A while back, I bought a CASE forklift. The ID tag on the forklift frame is unreadable, but on the ID for the tractor itself reads 440H. I thought it just had a bad head gasket but when I pulled the head, I found #3 piston severely damaged from continued running with antifreeze pouring through. (yes, the bearings are wiped also) The dealer partsman who is a friend of mine said it was most likely a 148 gas motor and ordered me a piston, ring set, head gasket and bearings. Head gasket and bearings are exact match but the replacement piston is 3 3/8th diameter whereas my liners are 3 7/16ths. The ring gap is close to 1/8th or more. The next size up from CASE is 3 13/16, way too big. The old piston is also longer in the skirt area. Anybody have any suggestions? (the other cylinders all measure the same)

Bill,
At one time it was common to sell overbore kits to fit the 148" engine. The bore size for the over bore kit was 3 7/16".Perfect Circle offered them at one time the part number for the overbore kit was 226-1492 piston rings and sleeve.
224-1779 piston
226-445 sleeve
4976 ring set, Rings are still available
You can get the rings at NAPA or anywhere they sell Perfect Circle engine parts, they are still listed in the PC catalog, possibly the piston but I doubt you will find the sleeve. They may be sitting around somewhere as old stock,it all depends upon how hard your parts supplier wants to look and how much his distributor helps. Hope this helps Terrance

Thanks Terrance! I'll start looking for the piston today. The sleeve will be OK with a hone. I could sure use that forklift now to help clean up after this hurricane. Anybody need one brand new piston and a complete ring set for a standard 148 Case engine?

I'm not having much luck on the piston search so I was thinking, is there any reason I couldn't just get 1 replacement standard OEM sleeve and use the piston I already bought? Would that 1 different size cause enough of an imbalance to give problems? Are they wet or dry? Bill

Bill, I dont think the differt diameters would matter so much. You may lose a litte horsepower because the cylinder pressures probably would not be balanced. I think these engines are wet sleeve. My 188 diesel was.

Hi, The piston you say is next size up would be for a 188 cu in. The 159 cu in. piston would be 3 1/2" bore. 440H should be a 148 eng. The only thing I can think of is somebody bored a 159 .060" oversize. Hope this helps, Dennis....

Sorry Case people, had a "dumb attack". Its not an oversized 159 liner. Terrance, Thanks for the info....Dennis.....
