I'm trying to find out some info about a DC-4 that I just bought. As best I can determine, the serial number is 8030866 -- this does not seem to jive with most of the other DC serial numbers I've run across. Is this serial number correct? If so, can anyone tell me what year this tractor was made? I was told that there was only one year where the DC's came with a foot clutch (as mine has) -- I assume this must be a later model, '52 perhaps?

I would appreciate any info that anyone could provide on this tractor.

Thanks!

Thanks Dale!

I have a few more questions about the DC-4... Per DCTom, mine is a '53 that was retrofitted with a foot clutch. I'm wondering about some other features such as it's 8 volt battery -- is that original or was that just added in place of a 6 volt? Also, I'm unsure of the shift pattern -- I was told that 1st gear is up and left while reverse is up and right. Can you explain where the other gears are?

Thanks for your help!

Chris,
I just interviewed an old Case service rep this morning and this is what he said. There were rumors of a new Case tractor coming out and it was supposed to be really something special- the 400. 1953 was not too good farming wise and tractor sales were down already. Case had a large stock of DC's and SC'c that the dealers just couldn't unload and so they doctored them up with foot clutch, big pistons and better seat. These upgraded tractors had the 800000 numbers. DC's and SC's were good macines but were getting dated by 1954. The shift pattern is as follows: lower and left-3rd, upper and left-2nd (the steering shaft-knuckle connection) lower right 1st, upper right-reverse, middle right (and a little hard to get into-4th. Your tractor was shipped to Newton Hardware and Implement. The building is still there and was a Case franchise until 1987. The ownwers and most farmers in that area still spoke German in the early 50's. Enjoy that DC!!! Don

Thanks to all for your responses. I now see that the gear numbers/letters appear in raised letters on the transmission casting.

Any advice on whether or not to convert to 12 volt (from 8 volt)? I've been advised to convert by the guy I bought the tractor from, but have also heard of problems -- is it worth it? It seems to start and run quite well with the 8 volt system. I'm trying to choose whether to get an 8 volt charger or convert to 12 volt.

Thanks again for all of the attention! This is my first big tractor and I'm very excited about it! BTW, the previous owner modified the tractor by adding a 3-point hitch on the front, adding a drive shaft from rear to front underneath and used it to power a 6 ft snow blower. I've seen his pictures of snow flying 70 feet in the air! I can't wait to try it this winter -- it will really help on my 1/4 mile long driveway... Chris
