Why would the brakes on the left side lock up and
not release unless you change directions from
forward to reverse or if you are going in reverse and apply the brakes you have to go forward
before they will release? I have new brake shoes,
return springs and there is no oil on them the
brakes are clean. Sometimes they work fine and
then the next time you go to use it they'll do it. what do I need to do to fix this problem

I agree with Marc. and from what I've seen, the latter is the more common problem- if the linings came apart, and there was metal to metal contact adn it ate into the brake housing, it'll cause a lockup... the only fix is another housing, and that ain't cheap.

Ted,

The ball sockets in the disc and drum (ref. 12 & 13) are worn allowing the balls (ref. 14) to roll too far up the ramps and then binding so that they won't return to the sockets until the brake assembly is reversed from its locked position. Another possibility is excessive wear or machining on the brake housing (ref. 1) and/or backing plate that the brake disc expands against. Follow the link below for a parts illustration of the brake assembly and parts referenced.

Hope this helps,
Marc
